General information of Antarctica

The ways to get to know this mysterious continent are diverse. There are numerous ships that reach Antarctica departing from Ushuaia and most sail with similar itineraries.

The Antarctic season begins in October and lasts until March.

The classic trip to Antarctica lasts between 10 and 12 days, depending on the ship and the weather. In the first days of the trip, the Drake Passage is crossed, one of the most challenging navigation routes in the world. Once on the Antarctic Peninsula, several islands will be visited where different animal species will be sighted: penguins, cetaceans, birds. This voyage also visits the Shetland Islands. Some trips offer a longer tour of the peninsula and resign the visit to the Shetlands Islands.

Another option is the trip that includes the Islas Malvinas and Islas Georgias. Between 20 and 22 days are required to complete this itinerary. Departing from Ushuaia, the Malvinas are crossed first, then Georgias, a brief passage through the South Orkneys and finally the Antarctic Peninsula. This trip combines adventure, history, culture and nature.

There is also the possibility of discovering Antarctica and flying over it by helicopter to reach a colony of emperor penguins, a place inaccessible by other means of transport. This trip lasts around 11 days. You cross the Drake Passage by boat and continue east to reach the Weddell Sea. There the helicopter raids begin in search of the emperor penguin. The possibilities of flying and landing in different places, such as Duse Bay, Seymour Island, Devil Island or Brown Cliff, depend exclusively on the unpredictable weather.

These are just a few options. According to each ship and depending on the time of the season, the itineraries and the activities offered in the expedition, such as kayaking, diving or snowshoeing, vary.
